Persol is a highly respected, world renowned Italian eyewear brand with a strong heritage in craftsmanship, technology and artistic expression.

Persol was established in 1917 by photographer and optician, Giuseppe Ratti. The name came from the Italian “per il sole” meaning “for the sun”. The brand soon became known for their technically advanced sunglasses for pilots and motorsport drivers. Designed to satisfy their exacting demands for comfort, protection and optimum vision.

Ratti created the first flexible temple known as the Meflecto system. This patented design incorporated two discrete joints in the side, giving it a unique flexible property which offered maximum comfort to the wearer.

The distinctive silver arrow is a key feature with a functional purpose. The hinge is decorated with an arrow on the temple, inspired by the swords of ancient warriors. Over the years, the silver arrow has evolved into the “supreme” arrow that today distinguishes Persol eyewear. This trademark is internationally recognized as an iconic signature.

In the 1960s, Persol were often seen on Hollywood stars of stage and screen such as Greta Garbo and Steve McQueen. The sunglasses continue to have a strong celebrity following with the likes of Tom Cruise, Daniel Craig, George Clooney, Zac Efron, Orlando Bloom, Jake Gyllenhall, Hugh Jackman, Justin Timberlake and more.

The crystal lenses, the pride of Persol, were originally a famous yellow brown, made from the purest silica guaranteeing extremely high protection from harmful UV. In the 1980s Persol revisited their roots in technological innovation. Their lenses were tested in severe environments including high altitudes, in the desert and in space. This proved their performance in extreme conditions and offered opportunities to experiment with the use of innovative materials. This success saw their subsequent participation in several environmentally challenging events such as the grueling Paris-Dakar race and expeditions to the Himalayas.

Today, Persol still maintains it’s roots and loyalty to tradition and quality. The eyewear continues to be made in the historical factory in Turin with the same care and attention it has always received.

We are now stockists of this world respected brand. See the sunglasses collection in store at Claudine Ickeringill Optometrists, Chichester.
